Linking two excel sheets so that one can read a value from the other 
is much easier than it sounds and it’s a function that a lot of people 
need. No one has just one Excel file and while it is easy to add data 
from file to the other, keeping up with the changes so that they are 
reflected across all files is both time consuming and prone to error. 
The following little tutorial helps you link a cell from one Excel file 
to a cell in a different Excel file such that it updates itself.

You will first need both your files open. Identify which cells you 
want to link. For the sake of this tutorial, we will assume you have two
 files called A and B. Worksheets are immaterial here. You want to 
reference cell A4 in file B so that cell C2 reflects its value.

Go to file A, select cell A4 and copy it. Next, open file B and 
select cell C2. On the Home ribbon click the arrow at the bottom of the 
Paste button and you will see a drop-down arrow. Click it and select the
 ‘Paste Link’ option under the ‘Other Paste Options’ section.

Each time you change the value in the source file, i.e. in file A, it
 will update automatically in file B when you launch it. The link will 
work so long as the the file’s location remains unchanged. The files do 
not have to be located in the same folder.

Combine Multiple Images Into A PDF File With Photoshop CS5

 In earlier versions of Photoshop, combining images into a single 
PDF document was a very simple process. Under the 
File>Automate>PDF Presentation option you could easily select your
 images and have a PDF redy in mere seconds. It was really easy to use 
but for whatever reason, newer versions of the software no longer have 
this option. While this particular option is no longer available you can
 still use Photoshop’s later versions to combine multiple images into a 
single PDF file. Here’s how.

Step 1: Open Photoshop and launch the bridge. The 
bridge is a component that comes with Photoshop and if you used the 
default install settings, it will have been installed. If you used 
custom settings and left this component out, you will have to install it
 first.

Here’s what it looks like once it opens. It will open in a separate window.

Step 2: Select the folder with the images you want 
to combine into a single PDF file. On the right you should see two tabs;
 Favorites and Folder. If you don’t see them, go to the Windows menu in 
Bridge and select the Folders window. Navigate to the folder with the 
images you want to combine and turn into a PDF.

Step 3: When a folder is selected, all files in it 
appear as thumbnails in the Content pane. Select a file to preview it. 
Drag & drop files one over the other to put them in the correct 
order for the PDF.

Step 4: Choose the layout for your PDF file from the
 right panel. Under document you can select the paper size and the 
background color if you’re dealing with transparent images. This is also
 where you adjust the output quality and set a password for opening the 
file. You can adjust the images’ position from the Layout drop-down. The
 other options can be ignored if you want. Click Save at the bottom and 
you’re all done.

Force Facebook To Detect Thumbnails And Links When Sharing A URL

A few months ago, I started experiencing problems with Facebook. 
Whenever I shared a link from a Facebook page that I owned or that I was
 managing, there would be instances where Facebook would not detect that
 I had pasted a URL in the status box. Other times, it simply wouldn’t 
load an image to use as a thumbnail. The latter I attributed to my 
internet connection acting up but the problem was recurrent even 
though it didn’t reproduce itself 100% of the time. When Facebook failed
 to detect a link all together despite multiple attempts, it became a 
problem instead of just an inconvenience. Fortunately, there is a simple
 solution to it and from what I can tell, this is a problem on 
Facebook’s side. Here’s how to fix it for your own Facebook pages.

What happens is that you paste a link in the Status box and it 
automatically detects the title of the link and picks the first few 
lines of text to display as a snippet. It doesn’t load a thumbnail. 
Normally, a thumbnail is loaded as well. The simple work-around is to 
refresh your page and try a second time. This happens with fresh links; 
ones that have just gone live and it seems it takes a little time for 
Facebook to index it properly.

This one is not as obvious to resolve and it’s a recent development. 
It isn’t very old and I’ve only seen it happen in the past few weeks 
though it is recurring and happens with new links. To fix the problem, 
go to Facebook’s developer tool for debugging (linked at the end). Paste
 the link where it says Input URL and click Fetch new scrape 
information. Once it fetches the information, try sharing the link again
 and it will be detected as a link with the title, description, and 
thumbnails loading accordingly.

Record Screencast On Your Android Phone Without Connecting It To Your PC

We’ve covered a lot of screencast tools for just about every platform
 there is. When it comes to smartphones, screencasts aren’t easy to 
record. In  fact, up until Android Lollipop, there were very few options
 available for recording a screencast that were super easy to set up, 
free, allowed unlimited recording, and didn’t require a PC or a rooted 
device to create. If you’re looking for a free tool that can record 
screencasts, supports input from your device’s mic, and can be used from
 just your device alone, give One Shot Screen recorder a try. It fits the bill very nicely. The only annoyance is the marqee like watermark that appears on the notification bar.

One Shot only needs to be downloaded from the Google Play store. You 
don’t need a rooted device however, you must be running Android 5.0 or 
above. Launch the app and tap the screen icon. True to Material design, a
 floating record button will appear on your screen and you can use it to
 start recording. The button, if found annoying, can be removed any time
 by tapping and holding, and then dragging to the close bar that appears
 at the top. One Shot’s Notification bar icon lets you start and stop 
recording, and once you’ve finished creating a screencast, lets you play
 and share it.

The first thing you should do before you start recording a screencast
 is head to the Settings tab of the app. Here you can choose to show 
screen interactions, choose the bit rate for the video, the frame rate, 
the orientation, resolution, and disable input from the device’s 
microphone. Tap the screen button at the top right when you’re ready to 
start recording. Videos are recording in MP4 format.

Once you’re done recording, pull down the notification bar and tap 
Stop on the app’s notification. You can play or share the video from the
 app’s notification once you’re done. Alternatively, you can open the 
app and view all videos you’ve recorded in the Videos tab. The app saves
 these videos to a folder named MakeEZ on your device’s internal 
storage. You can copy it to your computer via data cable if you like.

You can make screencasts without worrying about any 
time-restrictions. The watermark is definitely annoying and there 
doesn’t seem to be a way to remove it.

How To Set Up Parental Controls On The YouTube Kids App

YouTube Kids has just been released and its purpose is to help 
parents control what kids watch on YouTube. The content filters come 
built-in meaning YouTube decides (based on video rating and content) 
what types of videos are appropriate for young viewers. What it leaves 
in the hands of the parent is how long a child may use the app, and 
whether a child can freely search for videos. The settings are secured 
behind a PIN that will fool kids so long as they can’t read numbers. 
Here’s how the parental controls work in the new app.

Timers and search restrictions can be accessed through the app’s 
security settings. The settings can only be unlocked if you enter the 
PIN number shown in words next to a numerical keypad. Tap the little 
padlock icon at the bottom right corner to bring up the settings.

You’ll see the following screen and it’s a little obvious that if 
your kid can read the numbers, the security isn’t going to be much help.
 There are no options to set a custom PIN and ignore the app’s 
suggestions.

Once you’re past the app’s security, you can implement two different 
controls. The first is the timer which limits how long a child can watch
 videos. You can set it as high as 120 minutes. When the timer expires, 
the app will immediately block the video player and all suggested 
videos.

The second control that can be applied lets you prevent kids from 
searching for videos and limits them to viewing only those that are 
suggested on the app’s home screen. Additionally, you can also turn off 
the annoying sound effects the app makes as well as the background 
music.

That’s about it. I want to give them an A for effort but I don’t find
 this app to be very effective unless it’s meant specifically for 
kids who can’t read at all. Considering the content features videos from
 the Sesame Street Channel, a channel dedicated to teaching kids how to 
count, and let’s not forget Barney & Friends, it isn’t going to be 
effective for too long. I might be wrong but the parental controls are 
not very effective here.

The app is only available in the US app stores but will roll out to other stores in a few days.

Open The Run Command Box From The Start Menu In Windows 10

 In Windows 10 the first thing you’ll notice once you’re done 
admiring the new Start menu is the absence of the search field that was a
 part of the Start menu in Windows 7 and part of the Start Screen in 
Windows 8. It’s gone now and instead you have the Search bar. The Search
 bar isn’t your average local search; it’s also where Cortana resides 
and it also searches Bing for anything you might type in it (we’re still
 looking for ways to get it to use Google instead). If you get used to 
the Search bar and the speed at which it generates results doesn’t 
bother you, you can use it to open the Run command box but if you prefer
 the conventional way of opening the Run box, i.e. from the Start Menu, 
here’s how to do it.

Open the Start menu and click All apps at the bottom to expand the 
list of apps. The new Start menu features apps sorted alphabetically 
(which is awesome and something that should be done everywhere). Scroll 
down to the W section and look for a folder called ‘Windows System’. 
Expand it and it will reveal some very familiar Windows programs like 
the Command Prompt, Control Pnael, and File Explorer. This is where you 
can find the Run command. Click to open it.

Obviously this is far too inconvenient a way to open the Run command 
box, especially if you use it very often but since the new Start menu 
features a lot of space and several different sizes for the live tiles, 
it makes for a great place to pin the Run command box for easier and 
quicker access.

You can pin it from the Windows System folder where it’s listed by right-clicking Run and selecting ‘Pin to Start’.

How To Add Places To Cortana In Windows 10

 and among the many things you can do with it, you can also set a 
reminder. The reminders can be set so that they alert you at a specific 
time or place. Setting up a time-based reminder is easy enough but 
before you can set a place reminder with Cortana, you need to first add a
 place to it. Here’s how.

Open Cortana, click the hamburger icon and select places. This is 
where any and all places that you’ve added will appear. Click the Add 
button at the bottom and then enter the name of the place you want to 
add. Cortana relies on Bing maps so depending on how well, or in my case
 how poorly your area has been indexed and marked, you might have to 
enter the name of your city as well. It might also ask for permission to
 access your current location. Hit enter and wait for it to list search 
results.

Select the correct one to add it. You can enter a nickname for the 
place but it’s optional. If you skip adding a nickname, the place will 
appear by whatever name it has listed with its address. Where you can 
set a nickname for the place is also where you can mark a place as work 
or home. This will help you set up reminders like, ‘Remind me to call my
 mom when I get home today’. To delete a place, simply right-click it 
and select Delete.

We were kind of hoping that the Maps app in Windows 10 would allow us
 to add places directly to Cortana but as of build 9926, this isn’t 
possible. Perhaps as Microsoft continues to refine things, the feature 
will be integrated.
