How To Sideload Apps In Windows 10

Microsoft has finally seen the utility an app store; a certified 
place where users of its desktop and/or mobile operating system can find
 apps that are safe to download and do not come packaged with bloatware.
 An official app store helps developers as much as it helps ordinary 
users since it gives them a place that many users will turn to when 
searching for an app. They audience they get can help introduce their 
seemingly obscure apps. That said, Windows users are in a transition 
phase; we love the Windows Store but we’re not quite used to being 
limited to one place for installing our apps. Anyone who wants to 
sideload a modern app will be met with a bit of a snag since Windows 10,
 by default, doesn’t let you do so. Fortunately, it hasn’t blocked that 
ability and for whatever reason you might have to sideload an app, 
here’s how to do it.

Open the Settings app and go to the Update & Security group of 
settings. In the For Developers tab, select the ‘Sideload apps’ option. 
You will get an on-screen alert warning you that this might put you at 
risk (more on that later). To proceed, click Yes in the warning box.

So the question is, what are you risking here? The answer is you’re 
putting yourself at the same risk that you do when you install an app 
from an ‘unknown publisher’. Does that sound familiar to you because it 
should. Apps are signed by developers and developers (the good ones) 
will register with Microsoft so that they get a pass during 
installation. When you install a non-Modern app, Windows checks to see 
who the publisher is. If the app hasn’t been signed, it warns you of the
 same. When you sideload an app in Windows 10, you’re putting yourself 
at more or less this very same risk.

Pin Your Favorite Websites To The Windows 10 Start Menu

A few days ago we touched on how you can <a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/pin-frequently-accessed-settings-to-the-start-menu-in-windows-10/">pin your frequently used settings to the Start Menu</a> in
 Windows 10. Doing so makes for faster access and will obviously be a 
time saver while you get used to the new Settings app. For those of you 
who have been keeping up with news about Windows 10, you might know that
 Internet Explorer as we know it is no more. When it ships at the end of
 July, Windows 10 will come with the new rebranded and much improved 
Edge browser (previously called Project Spartan). The new browser comes 
with lots of great new features including one that lets you pin you 
favorite apps to the Start Menu, much like you can with settings. Here’s
 how it works.

This is purely an Edge feature so websites can only be pinned, and 
opened, in Edge. Launch Edge and navigate to your favorite 
website. Click the more options button and select ‘Pin to Start’.

Open the Start Menu and scroll to the bottom. All new website tiles 
are added to the very end. They appear with the website’s favicon. It’s a
 tile so you can drag & drop to reposition it. You can sort it into a
 group and even set the size to either small or medium. The tiles not 
only show the favicon but are also colored with the main color the 
website’s theme follows.

The only downside here is that you have to click the tile, or it has 
to be the Medium size for the website’s name to appear on it as well. If
 you don’t recognize a website’s favicon or it doesn’t load properly 
when sent to the Start Menu, identifying the tile will be a problem. If 
the favicon doesn’t load, remove the tile and try saving it again.

One of the things I’m most envious about when it comes to Android is 
the ability to initiate an app download from the desktop version of the 
Google Play store and remotely install an app to any Android device 
associated with my account. I would kill to have something like that on 
iOS. Pure APK Install is a new Windows app from Pure 
APK; a service that lets you download app APKs from the Google Play 
store. The app works independently of its own service and lets you 
install any APK file on your system to your Android device. You don’t 
need root access and you can choose whether an app is installed to the 
external storage or the device’s internal memory. For anyone who has 
trouble downloading and installing apps on their device, Pure APK 
Install is a simple solution.

Download the app and install it. It doesn’t try to sneak in anything 
extra so you can just click Next and Install when you see it. Once 
installed, click the Open APK file button and choose the APK file that 
you want to install.

Next, connect your device to your PC via the data cable and make sure
 you have USB debugging enabled. Additionally, make sure the device is 
not locked. If the device is locked or the screen is asleep, you will 
not be able to install an app to it.

Get The Windows 7 Start Menu On Windows 10 [Paid]

One of the most anticipated things about Windows 10 is the return of 
the Start Menu. It’s changed quite a lot over the year with each new 
Windows 10 build that Microsoft released and is now (as per build 10130)
 a pretty decent mix of the old Start Menu in Windows 7 and XP and the 
Start Screen introduced in Windows 8/8.1. It’s being received well but 
there’s a chance that some still might not warm up to it. With Windows 
8/8.1, developers were quick to roll out solutions that gave users the 
much missed Start Menu. In Windows 10, these apps become redundant if 
all you want is the Start Menu. If however, you don’t like the new look 
of it and would still prefer something closer to what you had in Windows
 7, Startisback++ is the solution. It’s a windows app worth $2.99 with a 30 day trial that brings the Windows 7 Start Menu to Windows 10.

You need only download and install the app (it doesn’t try to sneak 
in any toolbars or additional software) and the Start Menu will change 
to look more like the Windows 7 one. In our tests, it did exceptionally 
well and retained the Windows 10 icons for Settings, This PC and more. 
It didn’t play well in Tablet mode though.

like, you can even replace the new Windows icon used for the Start Menu 
with the classic Windows 7 orb. The Start Menu can be toggled with the 
Windows button on your keyboard. You can also configure the icon size, 
its appearance, and how you open it. To access the Start Menu settings, 
right-click on the Start button and click Properties. Cortana is 
supported in Search but must first be turned on.

Automatically Turn On Battery Saver Mode When Battery Is Low In Windows 10

Windows 10 has a nice battery saver mode. It may be there mostly for 
the benefit of tablet users but anyone on a laptop can certainly use it 
to get the same advantage. The battery saver mode can be toggled On/Off 
from the notification panel and is set to turn on automatically when 
battery is below 20%. If the setting doesn’t suit you, or 20% battery 
time means less than thirty minutes for your system, you might want to 
change this setting so that battery saver mode turns on earlier. You 
might also want to prevent it from turning on automatically. Here’s how 
you can do all that.

Go to the Settings app and click on the System group of settings. 
Click the Battery tab where you will see a ‘Battery Use’ option. Click 
on it. Scroll down and click the ‘Change battery saver settings’.

On the following screen, use the bar to set the trigger value for the
 battery saver mode. You can set it to anything above or below the 
default 20%. You can also set up exceptions for the battery saver mode 
which, when enabled, will limit apps so that they cannot run in the 
background. To add an exception, click the ‘Add an app’ button under 
‘Always Allowed’. Notifications will continue to be shown in battery 
saver mode but the screen will be dimmed. You can stop notifications 
from showing and the screen being dimmed by unchecking the respective 
options on the screen.

Receive Files In Dropbox From Non-Dropbox Users With A Link

Dropbox isn’t just an exceptionally popular service; it’s one that 
redefined file syncing, back-up, and sharing. Most of us cannot imagine 
any other way to have our most important files sync across devices. 
That’s why it comes as a shock when you have to work with someone who 
doesn’t use the service and prefers a different one. To each their own 
but if you’re a Dropbox user yourself, you will want to stick to the 
service and use its collaboration features over those of other services.
 Balloon is a simple web app that’s designed to help 
you out; it acts as an intermediary between the people you want to 
receive files from but do not use Dropbox and your Dropbox files. Using 
Balloon, you can set up a simple user friendly URL to share with whoever
 needs to send you a file and it goes right into your Dropbox.

To use Balloon, create a link by entering a name for your link and click launch.

Share it with whoever you want to receive files from. You can edit 
the link anytime (but remember to send everyone the new link), and 
delete it when you’re done receiving files. You can create multiple 
links if you want to receive files from different people and it’s a good
 idea to name a link after the person you’re going to share it with 
because Each link that you create and share results in a folder of the 
same name being created inside the Balloon folder in Dropbox.

People can send you multiple files via the link and view upload 
progress on their own ends. The files go inside the Apps>Balloon 
folder.

How To View Passwords For WiFi Networks In Windows 10

f you ever needed to look-up the password 
to your WiFi network on Windows 7, all you had to do was click the WiFi 
icon in the system tray, and from the pop-up menu, right-click on the 
network you wanted to view the password for to get to its properties. 
Inside the properties window, was a Security tab where you could check 
the WiFi password. Come Windows 10 and this option, while not lost, has 
become much harder to access. Here’s how you can view the password for 
known WiFi networks in Windows 10.

If you click on the WiFi icon in the system tray in Windows 10, a 
panel opens listing all available networks (known and unknown). You  can
 only choose a network to connect to but not view the network 
properties. The network properties is where the password is stored and 
can be viewed.

To get to the properties window for the WiFi network you’re currently
 connected to, right-click the WiFi icon in the system tray and select 
‘Open Network and Sharing Center’.

This will open the Network settings in the Control Panel desktop app.
 It’s worth mentioning here that the Network & Internet group of 
settings in the Settings app do not allow you to view WiFi passwords 
which is a bummer to say the least. It could have been much easier to do
 this if the option were present in the Settings app.

In the Control Panel desktop app, click the network you’re connected 
to. It should appear as a link next to the Connections field (see 
screenshot below).

Clicking the network will open a Status window for that network. 
Under the Connection section, click the Wireless Properties button to 
get to the wireless network properties. Go to the Security tap and click
 on ‘Show characters’ to view the password.

How To Customize The News Feed In Microsoft Edge Browser In Windows 10

A few days ago we touched on how to<a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/windows-10-remove-widgets-from-the-new-tab-page-in-edge-browser/"> remove the widgets from the New Tab page in Microsoft’s Ege browser </a>that
 ships in Windows 10. The solution is definitely very restrictive.  The 
widgets are basically news items, a weather report, and score cards for 
ongoing sporting events but since they are live web content, and things 
like the weather and the score for a live game will always be fetched 
fresh, the new tab page takes time to load. For anyone quickly wanting 
to get right down to browsing, this means more waiting so there’s a way 
to turn it off. For those that don’t mind the wait, but would like to 
see more relevant news in the New Tab page, here’s how you can customize
 what type of news you see.

Open the New Tab page and just above the suggested web site tiles, you will see a Customize option. Click on it.

On the next screen, make sure you’ve selected, ‘Top sites and my news feed’. Next, select the language you want to get news in.

Below the language selection, you will see categories for selecting 
what type of content you see on the new tab page. You have six very 
limited categories to choose from and I’m disappointed that Technology 
isn’t one of the categories that are available. It goes without saying 
that the categories are underwhelming and I’m sure if something as big 
as technology is missing, there are topics that are of interest to other
 people but that I’m not aware of, are missing too.

Click the categories you want to see content for and then click Save for the change to take effect.
