How To Set Up Parental Controls On The YouTube Kids App

YouTube Kids has just been released and its purpose is to help 
parents control what kids watch on YouTube. The content filters come 
built-in meaning YouTube decides (based on video rating and content) 
what types of videos are appropriate for young viewers. What it leaves 
in the hands of the parent is how long a child may use the app, and 
whether a child can freely search for videos. The settings are secured 
behind a PIN that will fool kids so long as they can’t read numbers. 
Here’s how the parental controls work in the new app.<br />

Timers and search restrictions can be accessed through the app’s 
security settings. The settings can only be unlocked if you enter the 
PIN number shown in words next to a numerical keypad. Tap the little 
padlock icon at the bottom right corner to bring up the settings.<br />

You’ll see the following screen and it’s a little obvious that if 
your kid can read the numbers, the security isn’t going to be much help.
 There are no options to set a custom PIN and ignore the app’s 
suggestions.<br />

Once you’re past the app’s security, you can implement two different 
controls. The first is the timer which limits how long a child can watch
 videos. You can set it as high as 120 minutes. When the timer expires, 
the app will immediately block the video player and all suggested 
videos.<br />

The second control that can be applied lets you prevent kids from 
searching for videos and limits them to viewing only those that are 
suggested on the app’s home screen. Additionally, you can also turn off 
the annoying sound effects the app makes as well as the background 
music.<br />

That’s about it. I want to give them an A for effort but I don’t find
 this app to be very effective unless it’s meant specifically for 
kids who can’t read at all. Considering the content features videos from
 the Sesame Street Channel, a channel dedicated to teaching kids how to 
count, and let’s not forget Barney & Friends, it isn’t going to be 
effective for too long. I might be wrong but the parental controls are 
not very effective here.<br />

The app is only available in the US app stores but will roll out to other stores in a few days.<br />

Open The Run Command Box From The Start Menu In Windows 10

  In Windows 10 the first thing you’ll notice once you’re done 
admiring the new Start menu is the absence of the search field that was a
 part of the Start menu in Windows 7 and part of the Start Screen in 
Windows 8. It’s gone now and instead you have the Search bar. The Search
 bar isn’t your average local search; it’s also where Cortana resides 
and it also searches Bing for anything you might type in it (we’re still
 looking for ways to get it to use Google instead). If you get used to 
the Search bar and the speed at which it generates results doesn’t 
bother you, you can use it to open the Run command box but if you prefer
 the conventional way of opening the Run box, i.e. from the Start Menu, 
here’s how to do it.<br />

Open the Start menu and click All apps at the bottom to expand the 
list of apps. The new Start menu features apps sorted alphabetically 
(which is awesome and something that should be done everywhere). Scroll 
down to the W section and look for a folder called ‘Windows System’. 
Expand it and it will reveal some very familiar Windows programs like 
the Command Prompt, Control Pnael, and File Explorer. This is where you 
can find the Run command. Click to open it.<br />

Obviously this is far too inconvenient a way to open the Run command 
box, especially if you use it very often but since the new Start menu 
features a lot of space and several different sizes for the live tiles, 
it makes for a great place to pin the Run command box for easier and 
quicker access.<br />

How To Add Places To Cortana In Windows 10

Cortana is the new assistant that Micorsoft is packaging with Windows 10. You can activate Cortana with a voice command, ‘<a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/enable-cortana-turn-on-hey-cortana-feature-in-windows-10/">Hey Cortana</a>‘,
 and among the many things you can do with it, you can also set a 
reminder. The reminders can be set so that they alert you at a specific 
time or place. Setting up a time-based reminder is easy enough but 
before you can set a place reminder with Cortana, you need to first add a
 place to it. Here’s how.<br />

Open Cortana, click the hamburger icon and select places. This is 
where any and all places that you’ve added will appear. Click the Add 
button at the bottom and then enter the name of the place you want to 
add. Cortana relies on Bing maps so depending on how well, or in my case
 how poorly your area has been indexed and marked, you might have to 
enter the name of your city as well. It might also ask for permission to
 access your current location. Hit enter and wait for it to list search 
results.<br />

Select the correct one to add it. You can enter a nickname for the 
place but it’s optional. If you skip adding a nickname, the place will 
appear by whatever name it has listed with its address. Where you can 
set a nickname for the place is also where you can mark a place as work 
or home. This will help you set up reminders like, ‘Remind me to call my
 mom when I get home today’. To delete a place, simply right-click it 
and select Delete.<br />

We were kind of hoping that the Maps app in Windows 10 would allow us
 to add places directly to Cortana but as of build 9926, this isn’t 
possible. Perhaps as Microsoft continues to refine things, the feature 
will be integrated.

How To Teach Cortana Your Name In Windows 10

Cortana in Windows 10 can learn your name; the first time you <a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/enable-cortana-turn-on-hey-cortana-feature-in-windows-10/">set Cortana up</a>
 it will ask what name it should call you. Each time you activate the 
feature, you will hear it ask you by name, what it can help you with. 
Siri automatically picks up your name from when you name your iOS device
 but Cortana goes the extra mile and makes an attempt to know your name 
and pronounce it correctly . You can enter it when you enable the 
personal assistant but should you skip the step, or need to correct it, 
the name can easily be changed. Here’s how.<br />

Head over to Cortana’s settings; click the hamburger icon at the top 
left corner. Select Settings and then scroll down to where it says ‘My 
Name’. Under it you can see what name you’ve told Cortana to call you. 
Click the ‘change my name’ button to change it.<br />

In the input field given, write the name you want to be called. You 
can go with your real name or maybe just Supreme Ruler of the Universe. 
Click ‘Enter’.<br />

To hear how Cortana pronounces your name, click the ‘Hear how I’ll 
say it’ option. Cortana will then pronounce the name you just entered 
and ask you if it’s saying it right. If it’s correct, click ‘Sounds 
good’ and if not, click ‘That’s wrong’ and teach Cortana how to properly
 say your name by speaking into the mic. Cortana will try and learn from
 the way you’ve pronounced it though in my personal experience this 
resulted in the pronunciation being worse than when it only had the 
spelling to rely on.<br />

If it still isn’t correct, Cortana will ask you to enter the name the
 way it would be pronounced in English i.e. phonetically. You can give 
it a few tries with the phonetic spelling and hear how Cortana 
pronounces it each time. This is about as refined as it can get and the 
pronunciation was very close to the correct one.<br />

3 Things You Can Do With Cortana In Windows 10

  Personal assistance apps coming to the desktop was only a matter of
 time and the Windows 10 preview build released a few days ago gives us a
 look at how <strong>Cortana</strong> will work on your desktop. 
Integrated with the search feature that debuted with Window 10, it’s 
more than just a way to push people to use Bing. We took it for a spin 
and here are three things you do with Cortana, and a guess at what else 
you will be able to do with it once the feature rolls out in the final 
version.<br />

<h3>
1. Look Up Weather</h3>
This is a seriously old trick for personal assistant apps/features. 
Siri can do it, Cortana can do it on the Windows Phone, Google Now does 
it, you can ask Chrome to look up the weather for you and with Windows 
10, all you have to do is say ‘Hey Cortana’ and ask it what the weather 
is.<br />

2. Add A Reminder</h3>
Cortana comes with a neat Reminder feature and you can use simple 
voice commands like, ‘Add a reminder’ to add one. The reminder can be 
set for a place or for a particular time. Not only can you dictate what 
the reminder is for but also speak where or what time you want to be 
reminded. Reminders can be set to repeat. For places to work as a 
trigger for the reminders, you will first need to add them.<br />

3. Search The Web With Bing</h3>
This feature is pretty standard with most personal assistance apps 
and the execution is really what makes any difference. With Cortana, 
anything you say that it doesn’t comprehend as a command will be sent to
 an online search with Bing. It will use your default browser and not 
force you to use Internet Explorer.<br />

These three features are currently up and running on the Windows 10 
build released a few days back but there are a few commands that give us
 the message in the screenshot below, one of which was asking Cortana to
 find a place to eat. Cortana does come with a Places feature so perhaps
 in future updates, or as we continue to populate our favorite places, 
the feature might work.<br />

How To Enable Cortana & Turn On ‘Hey Cortana’ Feature In Windows 10

Cortana is easily going to be one of our most extensively covered 
features of Windows 10. Cortana isn’t enabled by default so if you never
 set it up, you essentially have just the normal Search feature that you
 can type queries into and search online or on your device. The 
disadvantage of not turning Cortana on is that you can’t use the 
Notebook, Places, and Reminder features. Here’s the super simple way of 
turning Cortana and the ‘Hey Cortana’ feature on.<br />

Click in the Search bar and you will prompted to enable Cortana. 
Click ‘Allow’ and wait for Cortana to connect. It will then ask you for 
your name, and set-up will be complete. That’s all takes but this works 
if set-up is successful in the first go which it was’t when we tried it 
out.<br />

So, what do you do when Cortana consistently tells you it was unable 
to connect? Check if you’re signed in to your Microsoft account. The 
action center might alert you if you aren’t signed in or need to sign in
 again. The failure to connect stems from your credentials needing to be
 verified. After that, give it a few more goes and you should be able to
 connect.<br />

Cortana has an always listening feature similar to ‘Hey Siri’ and 
‘Okay Google’ on iOS and Android, respectively. Like these features, it 
consumes battery life and isn’t turned on by default. To enable it, 
click the hamburger icon at the top left of the Cortana pop-up. Select 
Settings and then scroll down until you see the ‘Let Cortana respond 
when you say “Hey Cortana” option and turn it on. Remember that if 
you’re running Windows 10 on the Surface tablet, this will effect 
battery life.<br />

How To Disable Login Screen In Windows 10

Your Windows PC, if you’re running Windows 8 or Windows 10, is tied 
to your Live account. When you login to your system you have to enter 
the same password that could open your Hotmail/outlook email account, 
log you into Skype, and even buy apps from the Windows App Store. 
Unfortunately, that’s also the only thing preventing access to your PC. 
If you aren’t too bothered about securing your computer with a password,
 and are just plain annoyed with having to login in repeatedly, there is
 a simple way to disable it so that you can just dive right in and start
 using your PC. Here’s how.<br />

Right-click the Start button and select the Run option. Type <em>netplwiz</em> and hit enter.<br />

This will open the User Accounts window. There are other ways to open
 this window; you can use the Control Panel as well. The Run dialogue is
 the quickest way to open it. If you have several different accounts 
configured, choose the one that you would like to skip the whole login 
and password option for. Uncheck the ‘Users must enter a user name and 
password to use this computer’ and click Apply at the bottom.<br />

Restart your system and you will see you no longer have to enter a 
password to start using it. Disabling the password has pros and cons of 
course, so be mindful that you’re taking a layer of security off your 
system and trading it in for convenience by doing this.

 is a free Android app that is essentially a really beautiful launcher 
with one feature that sets it apart; it lets you add a custom status to 
your lock screen.<br />

settings and tap Edit Message. Disable Auto Message to get rid of the 
default message that the app adds to your lock screen and then enable 
‘Use your message’. Tap the ‘tap to change message’ option and enter

show the text you entered.<br />

The app has some really great wall papers to boot so where you’re 
adding a nice way to get your phone back should you forget it, you’re 
also getting a really nice lock screen. The app additionally lets you 
open Hangouts (or your default messages app) and Chrome (or your default
 browser) from the lock screen.<br />

Hi Locker is a free app that does tons of other things that Android 
Lollipop has now restricted. To set up the app you will have to give it 
access to notifications and disable the default security lock in favor

What Can I Do About The App Could Not Be Downloaded Error (495) [Android]

 is a great smartphone platform; it’s rugged and built to be pushed to 
the limits. It’s also prone to the oddest errors. Even if you’ve got a 
completely basic device that hasn’t been rooted or customized in any 
way, you will still experience some of these problems. A common error 
many users might experience is the <a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/android/cant-connect-to-camera-error-on-android/">Cannot Connect To Camera</a>
 error. Another slightly less common but exceptionally frustrating 
problem is Error (495) which prevents you from downloading apps from the
 Google Play Store. The error might have a simple fix, or it might be 
something far more complicated but here are two things you can try to 
resolve it.

I’ve been getting this error on & off on my Nexus 5 when it was 
both rooted and in its vanilla state. The errors comes and goes on its

both of which have worked.<br />

Clear Cache & App Data</h3>

restart your device. You should be able to download an app now.<br />

Problems With The Network</h3>
Apps not downloading might have something to do with the network 
you’re connected to and this is the kind of problem that’s harder to 
solve. You might be able to download apps easily if you switched to a 
different network but that is easier said then done. Try one of these 
two options; instead of using your carrier’s network use your Wi-Fi 
connection, or if it’s the carrier’s network that’s giving you trouble, 
use your Wi-Fi.<br />

If neither options work, connect to your Wi-Fi network and reset your
 router. To do so, hold down the power button for a few seconds before 
you release it. Switch it on after thirty seconds and restart your 
device for good measure. This should resolve the problem in most cases.

Monitor Your iPhone’s Network And Data Usage From Notification Center

 it odd that Android got rid of lock screen widgets the same time that 
iOS added widgets. I miss widgets on the lock screen on Android but I’m 
also surprised that they haven’t taken off on iOS the way I thought they
 would. The bigger more popular apps like Dropbox and LinkedIn have of 
course added widgets but there are plenty of apps that haven’t updated 
to add a widget for the Notification Center. It’s prime space and if 
you’re often concerned with how much data you might be using, need to 
check your local or public IP, CPU usage, Memory Usage, and how much 
data you’ve used on your Wi-FI plan and Carrier plan, the Notification 
Center is a pretty convenient place to keep a check on it all. Here are 
some iOS apps that support widgets to for network and data 
monitoring. The apps themselves have more to offer but we’re concerning 
ourselves with what they let you do from their respective widget.

widget app that lets you view how much data you’ve consumed over Wi-Fi 
and over your carrier’s network. You can view the stats for each 
individually and also see how much data you’ve consumed for the day. The
 app itself doesn’t offer a great monitoring interface but it does let 
you set an alert for when your data usage has reached a certain limit. 
It’s useful if you are on a weekly plan with a low data limit from your 
carrier.<br />

<strong>Network</strong> is another networking monitoring app with a 
Notification Center widget. The free version of the app lets you view 
your public IP address, your local IP address, and your carrier, or it 
lets you pick what information you see for the Wi-Fi, Cellular, and 
Internet network. For each, you can choose to view only one type of 
information. If you upgrade to the pro version you can choose to view 
more than one type of information under each head.<br />

Last but not lease is <strong>TrafficMonitor</strong> which not only 
does everything that My Data mentioned above does but also checks your 
network’s download and upload speed using RadioOpt. It also shows you 
which network you’re connected to and is a pretty good way to check for 
the fastest available network in your area.<br />
