Take OwnerShip Pro: Resolve ‘Cannot Delete’ And ‘Access Denied’ Errors [Windows]

File and folder permissions on Windows are pretty great when they’re 
working for you but when the OS suddenly decides to deny access to a 
folder on your hard drive even though you’re logged in as the 
administrator, these very permissions become a problem, to say the 
least. You end up jumping through hoops trying to figure out why a file 
you created a short while back is no longer accessible to you. We’ve 
reviewed a number of utilities that help fix the ‘Cannot Delete File’ 
and ‘Access Denied’ errors, noteworthy of which is <a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-fix-cannot-delete-folderfile-access-is-denied-or-file-in-use-errors-in-windows-using-unlocker/">Unlocker</a>. A new app in this same category is TakeOwnerShip Pro; it has a super simple interface and is compatible with all Windows versions from Vista to Windows 10. 
 
You can breeze through the installation of TakeOwnerShip Pro as it 
doesn’t try to trick you into installing a million other things in the 
process. The install package file itself is super small so this isn’t 
just a one-click solution to your problem, it’s also a super quick one. 
Once you’ve installed the app, drag and drop a file or folder on to 
it, or use the Browse button to select it. If you select a folder, you 
can choose to edit the permissions of all sub-folders in it. Once the 
folder or file has been selected, click ‘Take Ownership’ and wait for 
the on-screen prompt that lets you know the operation was successful. 
You will now be able to delete or access the apps that you previously 
couldn’t.

permissions to the file. You can see this group for yourself by 
right-clicking the file or folder, selecting ‘Properties’ and going to 
the Security tab. A new group named ‘Everyone’ will be listed once the 
app has ‘fixed’ it. Delete this group and it is highly likely you’ll get
 this message again.

Can’t Receive Messages After Switching From iPhone To Android? Now There’s An Official Fix From Apple

Apple is known to poach Android users, and when someone decides to 
switch from an iPhone to an Android phone people are more than just 
curious as to why anyone would make a decision like that. Whatever the 
reason to switch may be, anyone who previously went from an iOS device 
to an Android device or Windows Phone would have experienced a delay or a
 complete failure to receive messages sent by iPhone using friends. Try 
as one might, they just couldn’t get iMessages or even regular texts to 
find their way to the new Android phone. This happens when you don’t 
disconnect iMessages from your  phone number. You may have removed your 
Apple ID from a device but iMessages is a service that must be turned 
off and simply removing your Apple ID from a device just doesn’t cut it.
 Unfortunately, not a lot of people will know this until it is too late.
 This very issue got a significant amount of attention in the blogsphere
 earlier this year, and Apple has just released a tool to let you 
deactivate iMessages from any browser using your Apple ID.

If you still have your iOS device, all 
you need to do is go to the Settings app, tap the Messages app’s 
preference and turn iMessages off. The app released by Apple is intended
 for when you are no longer in possession of an iDevice but your phone 
number is still locked to the service.

To turn iMessages off when you no longer have an iOS device, visit 
the Deregister iMessages page (linked below) and enter your phone 
number. Click Send Code and wait for a code to arrive on whichever 
mobile device you’re using. When you receive the code, enter it in the 
confirmation field and click ‘Submit’.

This problem usually arises because many of us assume that removing 
our Apple ID from a device also turns off all services configured to it 
when that is not the case. Think of it like this; suppose you added your
 Gmail email account to the Mail app on your iPhone and later, you sign 
out of it. Your Gmail account still exists, it just can’t be operated on
 that particular iPhone unless you configure it again. iMessages is a 
service just like Gmail where you may remove your account from the 
device but the service continues to run unless it is turned off.

Until AM: Mix Music From Your Local Drive Or SoundCloud [Web]

Mixing music and experimenting with sounds isn’t something as simple 
as creating a playlist (or a mix tape?). It’s a lot of experimentation, 
it requires a good ear, and a pretty good idea of what you’re doing. It 
also requires the use of complex and costly software which is worth 
investing if you know you’re going to use it, and use it frequently. For
 anyone just curious about mixing music and trying their hand at being a
 DJ, there is Until AM, a simple web app that lets you 
mix any two songs either from your local drive or from SoundCloud. You 
can increase or decrease the playback speed, independently control the 
volume of each song, and manage the delay for each one.

To add a song, use the tabs on the 
right column. There is one for SoundCloud complete with a search bar, 
and another for selecting local MP3 files. Browse for the file you want 
to use or search for a song in the SoundCloud tab.

Select the song and drag it on to the disc area. Click the play 
button next to a disc to play the song. The speed controls for each 
respective song are next to it and duly labelled. You can speed up 
playback or slow it down. The song’s progression can be tracked from the
 progress bars at the top. The name of the song being played in each 
disc is displayed at the top of each progress bar.

Scroll down for the Delay settings and use the mouse to select a 
delay point. The delay is charted between Reverb and Echo and the 
changes to the sound can be heard live as you play with these, or any 
other type of settings.

A single control in the middle lets you ‘mix’ the two songs. By 
default, the mix is set to evenly mix both songs but you can change to 
suit your own taste. The two sliders in the middle let you manage the 
volume for the two songs, again independently. Until AM is pretty basic 
but it’s great for playing around with just your local music and giving 
DJ-ing a try without having to understand (or buy) complex software.

Here Are Some Security Improvements In Android 5.0 Lollipop

 was rumoured to roll out on November 3, 2014. The new Nexus devices are
 now available and those who get their hands on one will be among the 
first to use the stable Lollipop OS. Android updates are not like iOS 
updates; they roll out over extended time periods that are months long, 
and they aren’t made universally available to all devices running 
Android. Many device owners will wait a considerably long time for an 
update to become available. This is a given when you decide to use 
Android but with Lollipop, there is more excitement and anticipation 
surrounding this release and you may be wondering why this update, of 
all the others, is such a big deal. The shortest answer we can give you 
is Security. Android Lollipop is big on it and we’re detailing just what
 the new security features are.

Malware, spam, information theft, backdoors to our information, and 
ads in our notification center are just some of the reasons that people 
avoid Android. The standard argument is that Android is not secure and 
you never know when an app might start stealing your information. iOS 
users like to bring up sandboxing to explain why iOS apps can steal 
information often unaware the Android does indeed sandbox apps. With 
Android Lollipop, security is now a top concern and they’ve borrowed a 
little something from iOS in this regard; security is much simpler and 
enabled by default.

Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is a kernel module
 that limits what information an app can access thus limiting 
vulnerabilities in an app. This module existed in previous versions of 
Android but with Lollipop it has been implemented at a deeper core level
 making it significantly more effective. All apps will be required to 
enforce SELinux so the new security measures aren’t just on the OS side,
 developers will be made to comply with it.

Device encryption has been possible on Android for 
quite awhile but it was never enabled by default, nor were users ever 
actively made aware the option existed. You can chalk this up to users 
just choosing to be lazy or ignorant but in the end, it is about 
compromised data and no one should have to search too hard for a way to 
secure their device. With Android Lollipop, when users power devices on 
for the first time, they will be asked to enable encryption. Before. it 
had to be located and enabled from the Settings app

Smart Lock Screens that unlock in the presence of 
paired devices will let you skip entering a passcode. Many users don’t 
set a password of any kind because unlocking a device is a nuisance when
 you check your device very often. This feature is built to take the 
inconvenience out of it. Your phone will be able to identify that it’s 
you based on other known devices that you own being nearby. The feature 
will probably work best if you pair the device with an Android wearable.

The Kill Switch is both a great new addition and a 
legal requirement as of 2014. It has to be manually enabled on the 
device but once that’s done, you can use the Google Device Manager and 
remotely wipe your device clean.

Android Lollipop is Google being more proactive about protecting data
 loss and/or theft. It identified stolen devices to be the number one 
cause of data being stolen and you can see that apart from the new 
security module, the other three features are geared more towards 
preventing theft of this nature.

Sleep Better Tells You How Well You’re Sleeping

Scientists still debate over why we sleep. There is no doubt that we 
need to sleep but the effects of sleep are simply amazing and worth 
every bit of research that is done about it. While scientists are 
figuring out the many mysteries of sleep, the REM cycle, why we dream, 
sleepwalk, talk in our sleeps, and that one time when Professor Utonium 
began robbing toy stores in his sleep, we wake up to the shrill call of 
our alarms wondering why it feels as though we haven’t rested at all. Sleep Better
 is an iOS and Android app by Runtastic, a popular name in heath and 
fitness apps, and it helps analyze your sleep patterns telling you how 
efficient your slumber was. Sleep Better integrates with iOS 8’s health 
app.

You don’t need any sort of wearable device to use Sleep Better. You 
simply set the alarm, plug your phone into an outlet and set it 
somewhere near you before you go to bed. Launch the app and set the 
alarm. By default it is set to 8 in the morning. When you set the alarm,
 you can record if you had a drink before going to bed, consumed any 
caffeine, had a stressful day, worked out, are sleeping in someone 
else’s bed, or if you had a late meal.

To edit the alarm time, tap the time on the app’s home screen. To 
edit the the alarm settings, tap the alarm clock icon at the top right.

When you’re ready for bed, tap Start, and tuck yourself in. Sleep 
Better lets you record dreams that you’ve had. Any time you have a dream
 (and assuming you wake up after it) tap the little cloud button at the 
top left of the app’s screen and record whether it was a good or bad 
one. You can also enter a note about the dream you had.

When the alarm rings, slide to turn it off. Sleep Better will then 
ask you how you feel and generate a report based on the data entered 
from the time you went to bed to when you woke up. The app lets you view
 overall stats for each entry you make but if you want to narrow it down
 to a month or week, you will have to buy the full version of the app.

Sleep Better also features ads which can be removed with the full 
version. The app is basically calculating sleep efficiency which isn’t 
exactly a thing as far as sound sleep is concerned. It doesn’t say 
anything about the REM cycle but does take into account the effect of 
the moon cycle on our sleep. (Very useful if you’re a werewolf). 
Overall, it’s a cursory indicator of the quality of sleep you enjoy. 
It’s free so there is definitely no harm in trying it out and if it 
helps you sleep better, then it’s worth it.

6 Handy Shortcut Keys To Improve Your Windows 8.1 Experience

The first major update for Windows 8.1 – dubbed Windows 8.1 Update 1 –
 was publicly released back in April 2014, and since then we’ve played 
with its <a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/heres-whats-new-in-the-windows-8-1-update-1/">many new features</a>. Indeed, it’s a major update, one that should have been there since day one of the  <a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/windows-8-review/">Windows 8 release</a>,
 and while there are a few changes under the hood, the prime directive 
of Update 1 was seemingly to improve overall Windows experience for the 
desktop users.  Today, we’re going to list six hotkey shortcuts that aim
 to improve your Windows 8.1 user experience one way or the other, from 
quickly closing Modern UI apps to accessing the Taskbar in Start Screen.
 So without any further ado, let’s get started.

1. Escape Key</h3>

Over the last two years, the Start Screen of Windows 8 has received a
 ton of negative press. So much so that Microsoft was finally forced to 
provide boot to desktop option to Windows 8 users. Still yet, the Start 
Screen remains an indispensable asset of Windows 8.1, and if you need to
 quickly move back to the Desktop from Start Screen, you can simply make
 use of the Escape key. You can press the Escape key to return to the 
Desktop but oddly hitting it again doesn’t take you back the Start 
Screen.

Interestingly, Windows 8.1 Update 1 also adds the taskbar to the 
Modern UI. Not permanently, but it’s there. This means that you can 
access Taskbar in Modern UI apps and Start Screen. The only caveat 
however is that the Taskbar automatically hides itself after a few 
seconds. But you can press the Win + T hotkey combination to bring it 
up.

3. Win + Down Scroll Key</h3>

In Update 1, Microsoft has tweaked the way Modern UI apps work 
slightly too, which includes letting users minimize a Windows Store app 
directly to the Taskbar in order to quickly access it again. If you want
 to minimize a Modern UI app with your keyboard, the Win + Down scroll 
key does the trick. Unfortunately, Win + Up doesn’t maximize it again.

4. Win + Dot + Right or Left Scroll Keys</h3>

If you press the Win + Dot (Period) + Right or Left scroll keys, this
 will allow you to place up to four Modern UI apps (including Desktop) 
side by side. This combination is helpful when you need to quickly snap 
Windows or swap their current positions.

Last, but definitely not the least, no other method can let you 
quickly close a Modern UI app than the good ol’ Alt + F4 shortcut 
combination. Try it, and you will thank us for that!

The desktop in Windows has always been an important asset to the 
users. It allows you to create application and file shortcuts in order 
to quickly access them. In Windows 8.1, if you press the Home key when in desktop mode, it will take you to the first desktop icon (as demonstrated to the left). Conversely, pressing the End
 key will move the focus to the last shortcut icon in the last row of 
the desktop. This can come in handy when quickly opening ‘This PC’ by 
placing this shortcut in the first row of your desktop icons (Home + 
Enter, anyone?).

Use Date Or Time With Modifier Rules To Set A Dynamic PIN – Smart Phone Lock

Locking our phone with a 4 digit PIN, or with a pattern is a common 
way to keep our device secure but to be fair, it doesn’t take a lot of 
stealth to stand next to someone when they unlock their phone and guess 
what pattern or PIN they use. Smart Phone Lock is an 
Android app that locks your phone behind the same 4 digit PIN but it 
makes it much harder for anyone to guess what your PIN is because the 
app will change it every time. Obviously this sounds ridiculous because 
if the app is changing the PIN, how are you going to know what it 
is? Smart Phone Lock has two types of PINS that can be set; a Date PIN 
and a Time PIN. These PINs, as you can guess, change according to the 
current date and time. If you set a date PIN, it will change daily, and 
if you set a time PIN, it will change every minute. If you still think 
this isn’t secure, the app comes with two modifiers that change the 
value of the PIN making it all the harder to guess.

Before you read ahead, Smart Phone Lock supports ads and that means 
you will have an ad on your lock screen. When you activate it, you set a
 default PIN which is what you must enter before you can make any 
modifications to the app’s settings. The app also asks for your phone 
number in case you forget your PIN so that it can send it to you by SMS.

Select what type of PIN you want to set. Once you select the basic 
PIN, you can apply one or both the modifiers to it so that’s it’s harder
 for anyone to guess unless they know the modifying criteria. There are 
two modifiers, one is the Reverse PIN which will reverse the value of 
the PIN. For example, if you have set the Time PIN, and the current time
 is 8:15 then the PIN will be 0815. With the reverse modifier enabled, 
you will have to enter 5180 instead. The second modifier is the Offset 
PIN which uses a custom value that you enter. It must be between -60 and
 +60. The value is added to the current time and the resulting value is 
your current PIN. If you use both modifiers, the Offset value will be 
calculated and then the reverse rule will be applied to it. These rules 
apply to the Date PIN as well but the offset value increases or 
decreases the year.

The lock screen itself is quite simple and we don’t really like the 
ad but more so because there is no way to remove it. You can hide the 
app from your home screen from its settings.

As far as setting a dynamic and hard to guess PIN goes, I think it’s safe to say Smart Phone Lock does it well enough.

Send A Window To A Different Virtual Desktop In Windows 10

Windows 10 introduced virtual desktops. Microsoft is quite far behind
 in introducing this feature since both OS X and Ubuntu have had it for 
ages. We don’t know just how cooked the feature is; whether it’s out in 
its entirety in the current developer build, or if there is more to come
 with the final release. That said, the new feature is very welcome and 
we’re hoping lots of third-party apps will be developed to help us get 
even more out of these desktops. Like virtual desktops on other popular 
operating systems, you can move apps between these desktops in Windows 
10. The process is much more refined in Windows 10 and makes it easier 
to send manage multiple windows.

To send a window to a different desktop, you need to have more than 
one desktop added. It isn’t necessary for any apps to already be present
 on that desktop. To add a desktop, press Windows+Tab. and click the add
 desktop button. On this same screen, you will see open windows for the 
apps that are currently running.

You can drag and drop a window on to a desktop. Alternatively, 
right-click a window and select the ‘Move to’ option and from the 
sub-menu, select which desktop you want to send it to. The desktops are 
named as Desktop 2, Desktop 3, and so on.  You will stay on the same 
screen but the window will be moved to the desktop you selected. If you 
have other windows to manage, you can continue to do so. If you’ve added
 a lot of virtual desktops, moving apps to them will be easier to do 
from this context menu.

I’m rather surprised this option isn’t available directly on the 
desktop which would make managing app windows even easier. You might 
open an app on one desktop, but want to send it to a different one. and 
being able to send it to a different desktop without leaving the current
 screen would be quicker. OS X lets you simply drag an app to a
